The beauty of this column is when I can introduce characters that should get more attention. I will come across a series and I feel I must advertise them. The great Jacqueline Carey posted an article about sci-fi and fantasy series that should be made into films. I ran across the Night Angel series and was instantly intrigued. Who doesn’t like assassin stories? I was amazed at how cool and intense the series is. I also developed a crush on the main character.

Who is He?
Kylar is the main character in Brent Weeks’s The Night Angel Trilogy. He first appears as a starving kid called Azoth on the streets trying to survive in a thieves’ guild. Like any kid on the streets, he has dreams. He wants to be a killer. He wants to apprentice with murder-for-hire extraordinaire Durzo Blint. Through a series of bloody events, he gets his wish. We journey with Kylar from boyhood to manhood.
Fun Facts:
- Assassins with Talent (think Assassin’s Creed and the eagle vision) are known was Wet Boys. They are a step above regular assassins.
- The proper robes for a wet boy are mottle grey. It’s best for concealment.
- Kylar gave most of his wages to support his childhood friend, Doll Girl.
- Kylar means “to cleave”.
- Kylar has the gift of immortality.

Why So Crushworthy?
I think you could call Kylar the “good guy assassin” — I mean, wet boy. He knows the job is full of merciless murder but that doesn’t stop him from having a heart. His relationship with Doll Girl is a great example. When they were on the streets together, he always made sure she had something to eat and protected her from the bigger kids. After starting his apprenticeship with Durzo, he secretly gives his earnings to the family raising Doll Girl. You could say that Doll Girl is his anchor to humanity. It’s also good to mention that Durzo forbids Kylar to even see her, much less give her support. Kylar breaks the rules to follow his heart. Kylar even has familial feelings toward Durzo — even though it’s dangerous to do so.
The descriptions of Kylar describe him as being blue eyed with dark hair. This is totally my favorite combination. Lots of girls get a crush on Kylar but his heart remains with Doll Girl. He even turns down offers from ladies of the night. It must be hard because the Madame of most of the city’s brothels helped raise him. Kylar is very loyal to his friends. He sacrifices himself so that his friend Logan can remain king. Kylar is strong, kind, and a great fighter. Check out the books and see what I mean!
