I mentioned before I pick each character by who I am feeling that week. This week it’s definitely Captain Hook from Once Upon a Time. I have enjoyed his character since the beginning but last week’s episode sealed the deal. I wanted to jump through the television and hug him. Captain Hook is probably one of the most interesting characters on the show. He is certainly very crushworthy.

Who is He?
Captain Hook is better known as the villain with one hand in Peter Pan. In Once Upon a Time, he is the captain of the Jolly Roger and a pirate with constantly changing alliances. He first appeared in season 2 working for Regina’s mother, Cora. He’s been teaming up with different characters since then. He is played by Colin O’Donoghue (The Tudors) on the show.

- O’Donoghue says he based his Captain Hook off Dread Pirate Roberts (The Princess Bride).
- Captain Hook taught Baelfire (Neal) how to sail.
- Jolly Roger is actually the name of the banners/flags flown by pirates with skulls and crossbones.
- Hook has tattoos of Milah and Rumplestiltskin’s name.
- Colin O’Donoghue is a member of a band called The Enemies in Ireland.
Why So Crushworthy?
What isn’t crushworthy about him? He is insanely good looking. The scruff, the bright blue eyes, and the debonair attitude. Let’s not forget the gorgeous accent. He is a charming flirt. He fits the bill of any swashbuckling romance hero. His physical merits aren’t the only thing about him. His character is always fun to watch. He isn’t bound up by fairytale goodness. He started out like a villain. I say like a villain since he really didn’t care about causing harm to Storybrooke. He was just going along with the plan to get revenge on Rumple. He cared more about self interest than creating widespread mayhem. It’s always interesting to see what he’ll do next. He began to change as he met Emma and the others — after a few double crosses. You could say his heart was slowly coming back to him.
Hook has a reputation to keep as a vicious pirate but he’s actually a nice guy. He secretly wants to be a hero. This really comes out during the Peter Pan story arc. A part of it is him trying to get in Emma’s good graces. The other half is trying to redeem himself. The scene where he admits to falling in love Emma is just beautiful. Or the scene where he tells her he will think of her everyday. I am glad Emma is realizing how awesome he is. Hook tried to go back to being a bloodthirsty pirate but his heart wasn’t in it. His character has really gone through some twists and turns. Sometimes I really wish Snow White or Charming would go to the dark side for a little bit. Hook’s back and forth between being bad and good really gives him character. I am looking forward to seeing where he goes next.
