I know I’ve thrown some hate around for the Anita Blake series. You must think I have nothing good to say about Laurell K. Hamilton’s books. It’s not true, though. I still harbor a fondness for the Merry Gentry books. The books never deviated from their original intent. Merry had to beat Cel to the fae throne or die. The original clause of this was she had to get pregnant with an heir. The book never swerved so off course it was unrecognizable. One of the best things about the Merry books is her consorts and guards. My favorite is Frost. He’s so grumpy and lovable.
Stats:
Full Name: Frost (So many nicknames!)
Age: Over 2000 years old
Occupation: Merry’s bodyguard/paramour, former Queen’s Raven
Who is He?
Frost was born from hoarfrost and helped perpetuate the Jack Frost legend. He first appeared in book #1 in the Merry Gentry series, A Kiss of Shadows. He was the Unseelie queen’s lover in the distant past and second in command of her guard. He leaves her to join Merry and later becomes one of the fathers of her children.
Fun Facts:
- Frost’s sword is named Geamhradh Po’g (Winter’s Kiss).
- Frost’s hair looks like silver Christmas tinsel.
- Frost was the first one to have relations with Merry — he hadn’t had “relations” in 800 years.
- Frost turns into a white stag when he is the sacrifice to create a new fairy sithen. He is later restored to his normal form.
- Frost was not born a fae; he was created by the gods and goddesses.
Why So Crushworthy?
Frost tried to act as icy as his namesake but he was a total marshmallow. He just wanted to be accepted and loved. He had to train himself to feel nothing for hundreds of years. He was tortured by the queen he swore to protect, so he had a few emotional issues. He was moody and arrogant. He needed some Midol on occasion. Merry helped to iron out his mood swings somewhat. I just really felt for Frost. I was so happy when he was liberated from Queen Andais. His character gave me the feels. I also had this image of him as the handsome silver and white warrior. I tried over and over to draw him. Doyle may have been darkness made flesh and a deadly warrior but he was never as cool as Frost.
Merry actually fell in love with Frost. They forged a bond that wasn’t about getting heirs or making magic. Frost was able to be kinder to others. Frost was willing to sacrifice himself so Merry could live and be Queen. He was actually confused when they brought him back. He thought that it would jeopardize Merry’s chance at being safe. She wanted Frost back more than the crown. I think I actually cheered during that scene. I like characters that are dynamic and Frost was certainly one that changed for the better.
