I hope everyone enjoyed/survived Thanksgiving. It’s time to resume the hum drum of life until Christmas. On December 13th, we will be graced with the theatrical release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. I am very much looking forward to it. I am also excited about the return of a crush I had during the first three Lord of Rings movies. Actually, I think every girl had a crush on him. We collected merchandise with his face on it. We squealed when he appeared on the screen. So this week, I give you the first of my Middle Earth crushes, Legolas.
Stats:
Full Name: Legolas Greenleaf
Age: Between 500 and 3000 years old (never really confirmed)
Occupation: Saving Middle Earth
Who is He?
Legolas is a Silvan elf from Mirkwood. He is the son of King Thranduil of Mirkwood. He becomes part of the Fellowship of the Ring that tries to return the ring to Mordor. He is a skilled fighter and archer. Men with bows are amazing. He was portrayed by Orlando Bloom in the first LOTR Trilogy. Legolas, though not in the books, will be making his return to screen in The Desolation of Smaug.
Fun Facts:
- Legolas’s friendship with Gimli broke down racial barriers.
- Legolas’s gift from Galadriel was a bow with a strand of her hair entwined with the string.
- Legolas’s name means Greenleaf in Silvan Elvish.
- Legolas can hold his liquor very well because of his high Elvish metabolism.
- Legolas’s eye color kept changing in the movies because they would forget to put Orlando Bloom’s contacts in.
Why So Crushworthy?
I would first like to state I was a fan of Legolas before the movies came out. I read the LOTR trilogy when was around twelve. The movies came out when I was sixteen. I really like his character in the book. He inspired my love for elves. Orlando Bloom’s Legolas only helped to increase the crush on Legolas. He was the poster boy for LOTR. I mean, the long blond hair blowing in the wind caused my teenage heart to swoon. I remember the LOTR bookmarks you could get. I had probably ten Legolas ones. I also had a really large poster and other Legolas merchandise. I was shameless Legolas fangirl. Legolas also inspired my love for characters who use a bow. He was just so darn cool as he shot enemies that were too far for regular human eyes to see. Or when he would shoot more than one arrow from his bow. He wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty fighting with his elven knives either. He is like an action star with pointy ears and amazing hair.
Legolas wasn’t as snobby as most elves were apt to be. He forged a strong friendship with Gimli and elves are supposed to hate dwarves. It was fun to watch their bromance play out. He was really kind to the Hobbits. He always had Aragorn’s back. You could always count on Legolas. He would be the best friend you would get a crush on. He would sit by the forest and admire the landscape with you. Legolas was one of the really cheerful characters in the novels and movies. He held onto hope throughout the journey. I like a guy with optimism. As as Legolas fangirl, I am looking forward to seeing on the screen again.
