If Shakespeare and Leonardo da Vinci could be reanimated, put in a room together, and told to produce something for geeks (and if they were taught modern English), it would be Planet of the Apes: Cataclysm. That’s a huge exaggeration of how good Cataclysm is. And POTA is more Caravaggio’s style than da Vinci’s. Still, I couldn’t resist the hyperbole. Plus, this is damn good POTA.

As you’ll recall from the last issue, a powerful lunar based weapon left over from the human days has sent chaos raining down on the apes. Zaius, of course, is the only one cool-headed enough to organize a response. Unfortunately, he has to dismiss the top Gorilla General to do it. So, that might come back to haunt him. Meanwhile, Cassia has to deal with the crisis away from home. Cornelius jumps to the rescue, taking her to the hospital. Nothing like a crisis to change people from an argument to working together.

Just as things look like they are getting under control, the river floods. You know how apes are with water. So, everyone is doomed. At least, that’s what it looks like at the end of this issue.

Despite what I said in the first paragraph, this issue is not as good as the first. But it still is a solid offering. And it sets up quite a few relationships and conflicts that will be interesting to watch as they unfold. All told, a solid story.
