The Dark Crystal: Creation Myths is based upon the Jim Henson movie The Dark Crystal. It tells the tale of how life came to Thra, the planet where the movie takes place, how the world formed around the Crystal, and how Aughra was born.
In the movie, Aughra is supposed to be evil or indifferent; however, in this comic, everything loves her and Gelflings practically worship her. And in turn, Aughra loves the Gelflings and all of Thra.
As the comic continues, the Urskek come to Thra as they heard Thra’s crystal calling out to them. The Urskek help the Gelflings become more prosperous. However, Aughra’s son, Raunip, doesn’t trust them and wishes that they would go away. He would be right to be distrustful, for in the movie the beings split into the Urru and the Skeksis and wipe out all the Gelflings. The comic ends with Raunip swearing to his mother that she is wrong about the Urskek being benevolent.
If you liked the movie and want to know more about the lore of the world of Thra, then you should pick up this comic. Not only does it go into great detail of the past of Aughra, the Gelflings, and the Urskek, it also contains some stories, like How The Gelfling Maid Got Her Wings, and more. The art style fits perfectly with the puppets from the movie. It will be interesting to find out how the Urskeks become broken in two and why Aughra becomes less content with helping others.
