I’ve been reading The Southern Vampire Mysteries, the books which True Blood is based on, and they are more entertaining than the show in many ways. Mostly, the characters featured on the show are more likable in the books. However, we have featured characters from the show on here before. Today’s post features a character that got a bit skewed on the show but always had Sookie’s back. In the book, he’s much more lovable in my opinion.
Who is He?
Sam Merlotte is the owner of Merlotte’s bar and is the town shapeshifter. He can change into any animal and Sam is always looking after Sookie. He remains one of her best friends, even through her many romances. He is one of the good guys in Bon Temps and takes care of those he considers friends. Sam helps Sookie with her supernatural problems when he isn’t tending bar. He was portrayed by Sam Trammell on True Blood.
Sam is a ginger in the books but Trammell’s character looks so much different on the show.
Why So Crushworthy?
Sam is the stalwart presence in Sookie’s life and is a fixture in the Bon Temps community. He is supernatural, but likes to maintain his humanity throughout the books. Sam has a strong sense of compassion and doesn’t do much for personal gain. You can can strongly say he is the nice guy of the supernatural world. The vamps and other Weres are power hungry, whereas Sam just wants a normal life. However, Sam is not to be underestimated. Being a shapeshifter makes him tough and he does not back down from danger. Sam’s protective streak extends to all those he considers friends. You don’t want to bring trouble to Sam’s bar.
Sam’s love life is not as woeful in the book and not the center of attention. There is more focus on his goodness than his romances. Sam is the glue that keeps Bon Temps together, like Sookie. Even though he is a shapeshifter, he is like the calm in the eye of the storm. Even though it took Sookie some time to realize it, he was her rock. Sam also shows himself to be a wise character who gives good advice. Although Sam wasn’t bad on the show, I fell in love with him more in the books.
