Doctor Who has always been full of ups and downs. The writing has been spotty at times but it has never failed to produce emotional responses. There have been some really sad scenes on the show. From David Tennant’s famous regeneration words to Amy and Rory falling to the Weeping Angels, the show has many heart wrenching moments. I decided to pick some of the moments that have sent me running for a box of tissues.
1. Sarah Jane reunited with K-9 in “School Reunion”
This episode was full of feels. It was honestly hard to pick just one moment from it. But Sarah Jane crying after she thought K-9 bit the dust in the school was just sad. Then, at the end the Doctor fixes K-9 fo her. K-9 is the part of the Doctor that can stay with her. The tears of joy when she sees that the Doctor left her a newly improved K-9 leave my own eyes feeling damp.
2. Madame de Pompadour’s Death in “The Girl in the Fireplace”
David Tennant’s Doctor was determined to help Reinette defeat those creepy, mustached robot things. He wanted to get back in time to see her after the day was saved. The heartbroken look on his face when he found out she died was just sad. The two had a connection that was cut too short. I would have loved if Reinette became a companion.
3. Amy and The Doctor reunite in “The Time of the Doctor”
I know the writing was really hit or miss during Matt Smith’s tenure. But I had to hide a sniffle when the Doctor saw Amy in the last moments before he turned into Peter Capaldi. It was a full circle moment for Matt Smith’s Doctor. He finally got to see Amy again. I got tears watching the YouTube video for this article.
4. Christopher Eccleston regenerates in “The Parting of the Ways”
I think each regeneration is meant to be a little emotional. But Eccleston’s is heart-wrenching for a few reasons. The look on his face when it happens is just hanky-inducing. It was both sad and excited. You also have a very upset Rose standing by. I think it’s his final words that really got to me. After all, they were fantastic.
5. River Song’s ‘Goodbye, Sweetie’ in “The Name of the Doctor”
I did get a little tired of River’s overuse in the series though I liked her character. Yet, her goodbye to Matt Smith’s Doctor was really touching. It was a very emotional moment on both sides. Kudos to both the actress and actor pulling it off. The final kiss and River’s “Goodbye, Sweetie” had me looking for a tissue-several of them. Regrettably, I couldn’t find a video of just that moment. It was all musical montages!
