With this new series, we get a glimpse at another world. One where the roles of the Scooby gang are slightly different, yet their mission is ultimately the same. Save Sunnydale and the world from supernatural attacks.

Note: This recap may contain spoilers!

As we begin the issue, the Scooby Gang are at the Transmogrification Emporium. They are brainstorming how to resolve their latest case involving a giant crab that is currently running rampant through Sunnydale. In this world, Willow is the Slayer, while Buffy and Xander play back-up in her adventures.

At present, Xander is his usual joking self, offering off-the-wall solutions that aren’t really helpful. The others are trying to figure out a plan while Giles runs through the books to determine what they’re up against. The creature is a crab-god called Scylla, translated to The Pinching Duke.

And while Willow is well-trained in the ways of a Slayer, she knows she cannot fight against the giant crab without some help. That’s why she wants to use the Amulet of Chromile to give herself a boost, even if Giles is against it. But the point becomes moot when the crab starts attacking the store. Giles finally allows Willow to wear the amulet and the fight is on!

Willow, Giles, and Xander face off against the crab while Buffy runs inside to grab the flamethrower. It appears she feels useless and tries to psyche herself up at different points in the narrative. The storyline may prove interesting to see how Buffy finds an identity separate from being a Slayer, or perhaps she will walk to path of Willow in our universe and become a powerful witch. Whatever will become of her, there’s a lot of nice hints of what’s to come in this first issue.

Back to the fight, the crab is drawn to the amulet. He picks up Willow in its claws to try to acquire the powerful object, but that’s a dangerous prospect. Giles tries to warn Willow that she needs to distance herself from the amulet before the crab reunites with it, else bad things will happen. Thankfully, she takes heed to the warning and throws the amulet to Buffy before escaping its claws.

The fight seemingly ends when Willow throws the amulet back at the crab. There’s a bright flash of light, then the crab tuns into a glowing orb of light that Xander picks up. Score one for the Scooby gang! And kudos for an interesting start to a new series. I look forward to seeing what these characters do in these new-to-us roles.
