Seekers is the brainchild of acclaimed comic writer J.M DeMatteis, who was awarded the prestigious “Best Humor Publication” Eisner Award for his work on Formerly Known as the Justice League in 2004 and whose resume includes various projects for DC Comics, Marvel Comics and now Boom! Studios.
Seekers Into The Mystery: Vol 1 – Pilgrimage Of Lucas Hart tells the tale of cynical, burned out screenwriter Lucas Hart, a troubled man seeking enlightenment and happiness in a world that he traditionally finds cold, cruel and unforgiving. Combining elements of fantasy, horror and the occult, Seekers also tackles some very heavy issues—incest, pedophilia, and substance abuse—while successfully remaining firmly grounded in the real world, where cities have names like Los Angeles and New York.
Lucas’s girlfriend, Rhonda, seems at first to be a trivial character, only briefly introduced and then quickly tossed aside to make room for Lucas’s self pity and self loathing. As the story progresses, however, Rhonda becomes the series’s most unintentionally intriguing character (the Magician and Charlie are intended—deliberately constructed—as mysterious and intriguing, so we will disregard them for a moment), at least for a female reader. Rhonda is the one who prevents Lucas from turning once more to porn, booze and drugs after he finally uncovers the repressed memories that have haunted him throughout his life. Rhonda pushes Lucas—sometimes literally—to face his past and all of its implications and to make better choices with respect to his family and friends. With Rhonda’s help, Lucas becomes one of many “seekers” searching for the unconditional love of otherworldly beings that sheltered him from a childhood filled with misery and abuse.
DeMatteis’ compelling story is brought to life by the art of celebrated painter, illustrator and animator Glenn Barr and award-winning children’s book illustrator Jon J. Muth, whose illustrations expertly blend the reality of Lucas’s daily life as an unemployed substance abuser living on the outskirts of Hollywood with the fantastic visions (or alternate realities?) that lead him on a journey to find the Magician, a Christ-like figure who promises enduring hope for the human race. Colored by Nathan Eyring, Seekers Into The Mystery: Vol. 1 will capture readers’ imagination with its cast of deep, vastly intriguing and entertaining characters and their intellect as they follow Lucas Hart on his pilgrimage into the depths of the human spirit.
