In a recent episode of Lost, the ageless Richard Alpert presented a young John Locke with a copy of Mystery Tales #40, a real comic book from the 1950’s, the era of Locke’s flashback episode. As with most things on Lost, what might have been a throwaway prop could also be the key to a number of the show’s mysteries.
A group of Lost fans has banded together to purchase an authentic copy of the rare comic via eBay. They ponied up $417 and now are posting the entire issue page by page on their blog, along with interesting analysis of the comic’s story as it might (or might not) relate to what’s been going on with Lost.
Among the hints they have picked up from the issue so far are references to the black smoke, ancient civilizations (perhaps like the one that constructed the four-toed statue?), and shadowy “others.” A lot of what they’re tying into Lost is very open to interpretation, but I tend to think that at this point the producers wouldn’t include a specific comic book without having an agenda behind it.
