Maru, a Scottish Fold cat, is one of the Internet’s leading feline celebrities, rivaled only by Happy Cat and Keyboard Cat in terms of popularity. Maru turned three years old this past Monday, as mentioned by Miss Cellania in Neatorama, whose writers documented the rising star’s humble beginnings in 2008. A quick look at his owner’s YouTube page shows the little kitty’s popularity: it seems as though none of Maru’s videos has fewer than thousands and thousands of views, with the more popular ones soaring into the millions of hits. He’s been mentioned in Entertainment Weekly and even in xkcd. He even has a book and a DVD available on his blog, run by his owner, and through the Amazon.jp.
However silly it may seem, there is a certain feeling of zen watching this large cat scale various object unsuccessfully or parade a paper bag over its head: after a hard day’s work, the sight of a cat doing something silly soothes the mind into a feeling of relaxation and calm. And the cat’s cute too!
