It’s been a long time since I’ve written pretty much anything for this column. A large part of that is probably because of the podcast, but also school just wrapped up for the summer. Anyway, I decided to combine a couple of different types of lists so that I could start writing the column again. Also expect some more reviews (and lists) in the coming weeks!
Stephen Hawking – “The Galaxy Song” (from Monty Python – The Meaning of Life)
I suppose this is technically a cover, although it’s sort of weird to call it that. It’s pretty much exactly as awesome as you’d expect it to be. Also gotta love the part with Brian Cox.
Molly Lewis, Marian Call, and Seth Boyer – “Space Weird Thing”
Here’s another sort-of-but-not-quite cover, this one of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.” For this version, they used only the most common 1000 words in the English language, inspired by Randall Munroe’s “Up Goer Five” xkcd comic. The video is also based on the original, which plays along in the corner. The whole thing works really well!
Fortuna Major – “Aerith’s Theme” (from Final Fantasy VII)
I know, I know, it brings up the sadness of Aerith’s death for me, too. But it’s a really beautiful a cappella version of the song done by the group formerly known as FatKid DogShirt (I think the new name is more appropriate for what they do).
Player Piano – “Doctor Who Theme”
The always great Player Piano brings us variations on the Doctor Who theme. What makes this one particularly great is the crossplay, complete with appropriate sonic screwdrivers. Love it!
Bonecage – “Nathan the Predator”
Oh, man, has it really been nearly 30 years since the first Predator movie? Yeah, this song and video definitely make me feel nostalgic.
Lipstick – “The Conan Song”
Glam rockers Lipstick really want to be on Conan’s show. So they wrote him a song to let him know. I hope that they get noticed and get a chance to appear! Oh, and if you want to help them out, tweet @ConanOBrien with the hashtag #TheConanSong.
MC Lars – “Dragon Blood”
Even I know that you shouldn’t fire Daenerys Targaryen from her job if you don’t want her to come back for revenge. Another awesome song and video from MC Lars; can’t wait to hear the whole album!
Richie Branson – “Finish Him”
I don’t know how I’ve managed never to play Mortal Kombat since I tend to love fighting games, but this song and video definitely make me want to check out the new one.
Johnny Hacknslash – “Hail, Hydra!”
This should totally make its way into Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at some point. It’s such a cool song! Hail, Hydra!
Tribe One – “Different”
“Different” is already one of my favorite Tribe One songs (maybe even one of my favorite songs period), so to see this amazing fan-made video just makes it that much better. They really nailed it.
Open Mike Eagle – “Celebrity Reduction Prayer” (prod. by Oddisee) (NSFW)
Social media as the American religion; seems about right to me.
