Flashbang: Polygonal Fury

This week took me back to Armor Games where I found this little game and was quite simply addicted. Polygonal Fury is inspired by older games Boomshine and Circle Chain and it manages to combine the two into one far more engaging package. Whereas both of those games only have one shape and one mechanic to work with, Polygonal Fury has three.

The picture above tells the whole story. There are circles, squares, and triangles. When you click on them, they do different things, and the goal is to destroy all of them in as few clicks as possible. Circles blow up, squares shoot off in a random direction, and triangles fire a beam that hits another shape on the screen. As you press on further into the game, it begins to take more “hits” to destroy a shape, and that’s when there starts to be some strategy to it. If you can time a circle correctly, you can start a huge chain reaction that will clear the board. But if you miss, you’ve wasted a valuable click to destroy one piece. If you hit a triangle, you’re guaranteed to hit something else, but you have no control over what the second piece is and what it will do.

Between levels you can buy upgrades to make your life easier. You can upgrade the results of clicking on each shape as well as improving the results of the clicking itself. Without upgrading, the “Insane” level would be impossible.

The graphics are nothing to write home about. They certainly aren’t bad, but there’s not a lot to do with circles, squares, and triangles floating around the screen. I wound up playing with the sound off as I found the music to be a little irritating, but to each his own. I enjoyed playing this game and it was a nice diversion for an afternoon. Surprisingly, when I came back to it and started over I still found it enjoyable. I’ll give Polygonal Fury a 7.5. It’s a little like Minesweeper; you suddenly realize that you’ve been playing for about an hour and you have no idea how that happened.

Do you make Flash games? Do you know of some great games that I may be missing out on and you’d like to see them reviewed here? Drop me a comment here and I’ll give them a look! Like they say, I’ll try anything once.

About the Author
Dax Collins was a geek long before it was actually a good thing to be. Growing up in and around Atlanta, GA, he honed his skills in gaming, writing, and TV viewing, never knowing that one day the three could collide and allow him to rule the universe. Video games have always been his first love, and he even went to school and got a Master's degree in Interactive Design and Video Game Development. He uses the degree every day, nonstop. Wait...

An undergrad degree (BALS - hehe) at Oglethorpe University in Communications followed by the aforementioned Masters at the Savannah College of Art and Design led Dax to work in the exciting field of orthodontics as a day job while working on a big writing project at night (it could be a game, it could be a novel) and playing a tremendous amount of World of Warcraft (For the Horde!). He wants to write the games you play and play the games you write. Dax lives in East Point, Georgia with his wife Sarah, daughter Lily, and two dogs Gatsby and Zoe.
