As a former cosplayer, I notice what people are wearing in movies and television — especially television, since I don’t hit the movies that often. There have been some great fantasy shows that have cropped up over the years and they have fantastic costumes. I compiled this list based on my favorites in recent years.
Once Upon a Time
From Regina’s haute couture evil dresses to the Snow Queen’s amazing white ensemble, OUAT has always outdone itself in the costume department. They don’t skimp on the sequins and glitter. Their costumes could be classified as fairy tale glamour. Even the men dress snazzy on this show. Just look at Hook’s leather get-up.
Game of Thrones
I like the detail that goes into making the costumes for each region of Westeros. You got the solemn, heavy garb in the North and the light, brightly colored clothing of the South. You can tell where someone is from just by looking at how they dress on the show. Who can forget Margaery’s skin-revealing dresses or Daenarys’s leather Dothraki outfit?
Outlander
The time traveling show gets points for historical accuracy. The costume designers spent hours making sure the details on the costumes were correct — down to the last corset. I loved Claire’s wedding dress. The design was amazing. I think people are still talking about it.
Merlin
Though the show is ended, it has some great costume designs. I especially loved Morgana’s costumes. She definitely had some interesting gowns. The armor was pretty well done, too. I really liked Arthur’s armor. The red cape really worked for him.
BBC’s The Musketeers
From the ladies’ gowns to the Musketeer capes, this show has amazing costume designs. Milady de Winter has some killer outfits. She would have fit in on a 17th century runway.
Worst Costumes
BBC’s Atlantis. Ariadne is the only one with a decent costume on the show. I always think the men are half-naked because of the pants they wear.
