At the end of each year we poll the Fandomania staff to bring you our favorite movies, TV shows, and video games from the year that’s concluding. Even though there’s always a lot of great stuff that excited us, there inevitably will be fan-crushing disappointments as well. In the spirit of venting out all the negativity before launching into the greatness, we begin our traditional “favorites” posts with a rundown of what disappointed us the most from the past year.
Here you go, Fandomaniacs: The most disappointing occurrences in geekdom from 2016!
Jason’s Disappointment: The X-Files
As a longtime X-Files fan who watched the original series religiously as it aired, I’ve been itching for some great new Scully and Mulder stories for a very long time. The nearly universally reviled 2008 movie failed to satisfy me, so I was holding out hope for 2016’s tenth season to redeem the show. Sadly, the abbreviated season had only one truly enjoyable episode out of its six, and it left me wondering whether I still want to believe after all.
Celeste’s Disappointment: The X-Files
I never watched The X-Files when it was originally on, so I spent half a year eagerly catching up on the show in anticipation of its return. Despite a severe dip in quality in the last couple seasons and the terrible, terrible second movie, I was hopeful Chris Carter et al. would take this golden opportunity to right their mistakes. Instead, they doubled down on them, went way overboard on blatant political messages, and completely failed to bring the show and its characters into 2016 both in terms of content and structure. I just can’t take anymore.
Mandi’s Disappointment: Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
The only good thing about this movie was Wonder Woman. It was way too dark and made the iconic heroes unlikable. I hope that Justice League has a better tone.
Kendra’s Disappointment: Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
(Spoiler alert!) Other than the results of the 2016 election, my biggest disappointment had to be this movie. It was far too long, and that fight scene? Pitiful. It all ended because their moms share the same name? I let out the biggest laugh in the theater because come on. You were THAT mad, but oh — her name’s Martha — all is forgiven.
Kimberly’s Disappointment: American Horror Story: Roanoke
I was very excited to learn that the new American Horror Story would be set in North Carolina, centered around The Lost Colony and the area where I grew up. However, after having suffered through a season that seemed offensive to anyone connected to the area, I have to say this is a season definitely to miss. Onward to better writing next time.
Ann’s Disappointment: Doctor Who
My biggest disappointment this year is that we have had no new Doctor Who except for the Christmas special. Considering the size of the Whovian contingent worldwide, you’d think the Who Powers That Be should have known what kind of hue and cry their decision to delay the next series would cause, and you’d think they’d work a little harder to make it happen instead of making us wait. Even a fall release would have been better than nothing!
