RuPaul’s Drag Race is huge. I had no idea how huge until I fell into the rabbit hole and began watching. The show is in its twelfth season, and I started watching from the beginning late last year. The show is headed by RuPaul, one of the most famous drag queens in existence. The premise of the show is drag queens from around the United States compete to become the top “drag superstar.” The show has spotlighted some amazing queens, drama, and memes. It has also inspired an enormous fanbase, even leading to the creation of DragCon.
The Drag Race fanbase is devoted and dynamic. They follow each show hashtag with posts on Twitter and Instagram. Fans are devoted followers of the queens on their social media pages. I must admit I follow many of my favorite queens on their social media. I am a devotee of Trixie Mattel, Katya, and Jinkx Monsoon. The queens have their own set of fans with nicknames and fan pages. DragRace fans never miss an episode. Like most fandoms, there is a dark side. People will get into online arguments over queens being sent home. If they feel one was sent home unfairly, the online outrage will begin. The fandom is large enough to inspire RuPual to begin DragCon. It’s a place for fans to immerse themselves in drag culture and meet their favorite queens.
The show itself has spawned several spin-off series. There is Drag Race All-Stars, Drag U, and Drag Race UK. There is the newly create RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race that will air soon. The Drag Race fandom and series show no signs of slowing down.
Overall, being a DragRace fan is fun. The show has got me through difficult times the past year. I love to see the amazing transformations the queens produce on the show. They are beautiful, quirky, and amazing performers. The show has increased my vocabulary with drag slang. Each episode offers humor, fun, and all the drag queen drama views could wish for. Drag Race offers so much to viewers and fans each episode. Check it out!
