This week’s crushworthy character has “saved the world — a lot”. She’s not only a kick ass female heroine but she turned into a geek’s ultimate dream girl. She first appeared in a 1992 film but it was the TV show that truly brought Buffy to all of us. It was definitely one of my favorite shows as a teenager. I couldn’t miss seeing a single episode. Even after the show ended and continued into the comic books, she still inspires writers and character creators to model female heroines after her.
Who is She?
Buffy Summers is the main protagonist in Joss Whedon’s hit show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and was played by Sarah Michelle Gellar. Buffy was a normal teenage girl until her 15th birthday. She learned that she was descended from a long line of vampire slayers and it was her job to protect the innocents. Buffy has the distinction of being one tough girl — she is one of the longest lived slayers in history. Even after the show ended, she still continues to save the world in the comics.
Fun Fact:
Buffy was largely inspired by X-Men’s Kitty Pryde. I can see the similarities.
I’m the thing that monsters have nightmares about. And right now, you and me are gonna show ‘em why. -Buffy
Why So Crushworthy?
Buffy is a crushworthy masterpiece. On the surface we were given a blonde valley girl cheerleader with great fashion sense. What we really got was a lean, mean, vampire fighting machine. Buffy inspired girls everywhere that we were just as strong as guys. We could be beautiful, smart, and tough. I related more to Willow but I wanted to be Buffy when I was a teenager. I wanted to fight vampires in high school. Buffy wanted to live a normal life but I wanted to live Buffy’s. I mean, she got to hang around Angel. One of these days he will be featured on this list.
Buffy led the way for strong female roles in television. Girls could save the day and kick the bad guy’s butt in time to make it to social events. Girls didn’t just have to be sidekicks who stayed behind the scenes. They could lead the charge. Buffy is still one of the most popular sci-fi and fantasy TV characters. Buffy taught us different lessons about life. She taught us that being a popular wasn’t the most important thing in life. She taught us to value our best friends — especially those who have your back no matter what. She let us know that you could stand alone and still be fine. Buffy still is one of the most crushworthy characters out there.
