Geraldine Page and Paul Newman star in Richard Brooks’ adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ play, a paean to washed out and wasted youth. Failed actor and gigolo Chance Wayne (Newman) has attached himself to fading movie queen Alexandra Del Lago (Page) as an escort to guide her back to Hollywood in time for her comeback premiere. He has one stop to make on the way, the town he fled years before. But the town has a long memory, and the wounds he left in Heavenly (Shirley Knight), the girl he left behind, demand recompense.
