We’re in the final full week of 2018, and we’re continuing our compilations of the Fandomania staff’s favorite releases of the year. Yesterday we talked about our favorite movies of 2018, and today we’re taking a look back at our favorite video games.
Detroit: Become Human
“I’m a longtime fan of Quantic Dream’s brand of adventure games, and Detroit provided exactly the kinds of nuanced characters and moral quandaries I was hoping for in an android game from David Cage.” – Jason Dorough
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey
“This is the only new game I’ve played this year. The high quality scenery alone ranks it high in my book. I like that you can either play as Alexios or Kassandra. It deepens the gameplay experience. The storyline is also amazing, along with the dash of Greek mythology throw in.” – Mandi Harris
“I started playing Odyssey after the deadline to turn in my 2018 favorites lists and after I’d already made my picks. This game is so good that I leveraged editorial privilege to update my picks right before this post went live. Odyssey refines and makes better everything that made Origins great, Ancient Greece is a vibrant and beautiful setting, and Kassandra just might be my favorite Assassin’s Creed protagonist yet!” – Jason Dorough
Monster Hunter: World
“This was my first foray into the Monster Hunter franchise, and it’s easy to see what all the hype is about. The hunt-kill-craft-eat loop sucks you in quickly, and Palicoes are probably my favorite things in 2018 gaming.” – Jason Dorough
BattleTech
“I loved playing BattleTech as a tabletop game back when it first came out. So when a video game version came up on Kickstarter, I jumped on board. The video game keeps many of the same elements as the tabletop version, but you can actually play a story mode so you can play solo. It’s a fun, faithful recreation of the original game.” – Chad Walker
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
“This game technically released in 2017 but just arrived on Xbox One in 2018, and that’s where I played it. It’s a fascinatingly intense game about mental illness, set in the 8th century against a background of Norse mythology.” – Jason Dorough
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
“I wasn’t a huge fan of the snowy setting for Rise of the Tomb Raider, so this year’s return to tropical raids was a welcome one for me. This game is a culmination of the Trinity trilogy that began with the series reboot, and I can’t wait to see where the thread leads next time.” – Jason Dorough
Forza Horizon 4
“The best racing game series continues to deliver with the newest release. While Horizon 4 does take some steps backwards with the way it handles clubs and intra-club competition, it excels in every other department. The introduction of changing seasons linked to the Forzathon challenges provides a compelling reason for fans to check back every week.” – Jason Dorough
