As 2017 draws to a close, we’re sticking to our annual tradition of appreciating our favorite geeky things from the past year. Yesterday we began by looking at some of the biggest disappointments of 2017. With the negativity out of the way, today we’re turning to the positive side of the year. We polled the Fandomania staff to find out what everyone’s favorite movies for 2017 were, and here are the results.
Wonder Woman
“Wonder Woman was AMAZING! Literally my only complaint with the entire movie was the boob-plate armor. WW has been my absolute favorite superhero ever since the early ’80s when I watched Lynda Carter do her costume change spin move in syndication, and Gal Godot certainly is a worthy successor. I enjoyed the heck out of this movie!” – Ann Wells
“Wonder Woman was smart to focus on Diana and her introduction to the world at large. She and the other Amazons were amazing to watch in action, with some of the best fight sequences I’ve seen in a while. But most importantly, I loved that Diana’s biggest strength is actually her compassion.” – Celeste Monsour
“I have no trouble admitting I jumped on the woman-led superhero film. Jumping on that train paid off. Gadot’s Wonder Woman is amazing. The storyline of the movie was great as well. I got connected to her character, and I’m looking forward to the sequel.” – Mandi Harris
“Every scene where Gal Gadot is kicking ass was a reminder that when you need a job done right, call a woman.” – Kendra Beltran
Get Out
“A modern, horrific look at being Black in America from Jordan Peele was hands down my favorite movie of the year. The fact that it presented white privilege so strong that I, a mixed Black woman, thought Allison Williams was totally in the clear until she took out her car keys still shakes me to the core.” – Kendra Beltran
“Everyone raved about this movie, but it took me a long time to finally get around to watching it. It’s a fascinating twist on the horror genre with thought-provoking social commentary. It’s one of those movies that has you thinking about it long after it’s finished.” – Chad Walker
“I missed seeing Get Out in theaters, and nothing prepared me for how great and disturbing this movie would be. It’s my favorite thriller of the year and feels like an extended, topical Twilight Zone episode, which seems appropriate given that Jordan Peele now is helming the upcoming Twilight Zone TV series.” – Jason Dorough
Thor: Ragnarok
“This movie was entertaining from start to finish. I loved Thor’s bromance with the Hulk, Valkyrie, and all the humor in the film. I loved seeing Cate Blanchett’s Hela kick butt as well. I’m looking forward to when it’s released for home viewing.” – Mandi Harris
“Marvel movies are always the same to me. An hour of backstory (we already freaking know), 45 other characters on screen just to set up 45 new movies, and then some action. Thor: Ragnarok was finally the superhero movie I’d been dying to see. To the point, action-packed and hilarious. Seriously, from here on out I only want Taika Waititi to direct and his Three Wise Men Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle, and Christopher Yost to write.” – Kendra Beltran
Spider-Man Homecoming
“I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this film as much as I did. Tom Holland’s Peter Parker was endearing, and he embodied the struggling hero. The storyline fit well into the larger Marvel Universe and I look forward to more installments.” – Mandi Harris
“I’ve never been a huge Spider-Man fan, but Tom Holland’s version of the character has won me over. I enjoyed all three MCU movies in 2017, but Homecoming is my favorite, largely thanks to Holland’s Peter Parker and Michael Keaton’s Vulture.” – Jason Dorough
Happy Death Day
“Who could have guessed that Scream crossed with Groundhog Day would be my favorite movie of 2017?” – Jason Dorough
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
“I saw this one in theaters twice, once on my own, and once with my wife. We both loved the first one, and this one actually somehow topped it. From Groot’s dancing in the opening scene all the way to Adam Warlock and the Watchers, I was completely drawn into the world of the Guardians. It’s so great!” – Chad Walker
It
“When Stephen King adaptations are bad, they’re really bad (see this year’s The Dark Tower). But when they’re good, they can be amazing, like this engrossing take on It that would become the highest grossing horror movie of all time.” – Jason Dorough
The Belko Experiment
“Scary movies tend to make me laugh for all the wrong reasons, but The Belko Experiment managed to put the comedy in all the right places. A guessing game up until the end, it served as one of the most underrated movies of 2017.” – Kendra Beltran
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
“Middle parts of a series are difficult to pull off (especially if you don’t know where they’re headed), and I’m guessing that some of the loose threads in this movie will pay off in Episode 9. I could probably go on and on about what I loved (Luke! Porgs! Things that didn’t involve Ahch-To!) and didn’t (too little Phasma! a certain lightsaber incident!), but on balance (pun definitely intended), I thoroughly enjoyed it!” – Chad Walker
Logan
“I’m a die-hard Marvel Cinematic Universe fan, but my favorite superhero movie of the year came from outside the MCU (pending the results of Disney buying Fox). Logan is a perfect coda for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Patrick Stewart’s Xavier, and it feels like a fitting conclusion (but isn’t) to the overall Fox mutant franchise.” – Jason Dorough
Power Rangers
“It seemed like NO ONE liked this movie, but I appreciated the Power Rangers being shown as more than cookie-cutter teens. We finally got some insight into who they before being Rangers brought them together.” – Kendra Beltran
