Fall is the time for new television shows and for movie studios to throw out some big hits before the year ends. To me, this fall’s new offerings seem smaller than last year’s. However, there are some picks that look interesting and I look forward to checking them out. There are also some great movies coming out in the upcoming months that will be sure to delight and entertain through pumpkin spice fever and the cold winter months.
In no particular order… (Release dates are not included because sometimes they change unexpectedly).
TV Shows
1. Luke Cage (Netflix)
Netflix’s next show in its Marvel series features Mike Colter as Luke Cage taking out bad guys and fighting corruption. With successes like Daredevil and Jessica Jones that preceded it, Luke Cage is sure to be an entertaining hit.
2. Timeless (NBC)
For fans of time travel dramas, Timeless tells the story of a trio of agents tasked with stopping a criminal who stole a time machine. The show looks to be a good mix of science fiction and a crime drama and I look forward to checking it out.
3. MacGyver (CBS)
For some reason, the remake of this classic show is piquing my interest. Lucas Till stars as the man who can make anything to get out of a sticky spot and the show promises to be quirky and add a good dose of retro nostalgia.
4. Emerald City (NBC)
It’s hit or miss when it comes to new imaginings of classic stories. Emerald City is a dark version of The Wizard of Oz that is worth watching just to see this new version of the story.
5. Midnight, Texas (NBC)
I’m a François Arnaud (The Borgias, Blindspot) and Charlaine Harris (The Southern Vampire Mysteries) fan so this series already has two points in its favor. Midnight, Texas is a showed based on another of Harris’s series, in the same vein as True Blood.
Bonus: Conviction (ABC), Time after Time (ABC)
Movies
1. Doctor Strange
Another Marvel offering comes out right before my birthday, starring Benedict Cumberbatch at the titular character. The previews have been promising and it’s good to see another character, not part of the current Avengers, save the world.
2. Star Wars: Rogue One
This tale takes place before the events of Episode III and Episode IV and tells the story of the Rebels stealing the plans to the Death Star. It looks like it will be an action-packed story and will tide you over until the next numbered Star Wars movie.
3. Assassin’s Creed
I’m not sure if the film based on the game franchise will disappoint or not. However, I can’t stay way from seeing it and Michael Fassbender is an excellent actor. I think this is definitely a wait and see type of film.
4. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
Tim Burton’s take on the modern classic book promises dark wonders and an eccentric cast of characters. The film looks like it will be visually stunning along with showcasing the best parts of the book.
5. Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them
People suffering from a lack of Harry Potter films will enjoy the tale of Newt Scamander brought to life. I will admit I’m not the biggest HP fan, but I do enjoy this story and look forward to the adaptation.
