Another year is over and done with and this is just another list to remind you what went down in 2014 in terms of news and pop culture. While Adele Dazeem made you laugh, Jordan Catalano made you proud, and Ariana Grande made you realize what a scared cat would look like if it could sing, those were not the top moments of this year. Instead, those involved a charity that went too far, a girl who just wanted to be seen as fancy, a disease that caused hysteria, and more.

10. Jeremy Meeks

Women got a lot of flak when this guy’s mugshot was released. Hey, can you blame us? Those eyes are something else.

9. Iggy Azalea

This Australian import couldn’t be stopped. Her song “Fancy” was basically the only thing on the radio this summer and came with a video that paid homage to Clueless. We’re not sure if she’ll be around come next year, but it was fun while it lasted.

8. Cancer

Wait, what? Okay, so hear me out. ABC Family had a hit with Chasing Life and then John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars made every kid say, “Okay.”

7. The World Cup

We were all reminded how none of our friends like the sport of soccer until it was the only thing they could talk about.

6. The Missing Malaysian Plane

We really hope those on board are now just living out Lost.

5. Matthew McConaughey

An Oscar, True Detective, a weird car commercial. There was no stopping this guy and that’s alright, alright, alright with us.

4. Ebola

Every year has to have that one outbreak that makes us all think we’re going to die, right?

3. Elevators

best-year-2014-elevators

From NFL athletes to Jay-Z, elevators were having a pretty big year.

2. ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Some forgot there was an actual purpose for doing it, and then it just became as annoying as last year’s YOLO.

1. Chris Pratt

He was no Groot, but this dude went from sitcom funnyman to a hottie with a household name. He was an average Joe in The LEGO Movie and the guy whose ship we all wanted on in Guardians of the Galaxy.
