The Doctor: pick your favorite one. This edition of Crushworthy Characters isn’t just about one in particular. From William Hartnell to Peter Capaldi, the Doctor has intrigued us and taken us along on his adventures since 1963. The Doctor is many men but the idea of him, the promise of seeing the whole universe, is irresistible. The Doctor captures our hearts and imagination. Wouldn’t we all like to hop in the TARDIS and be a companion?
The Doctor is a magnet that draws people (all forms of life) towards him. He is a storm that breaks into your life and turns it upside down. Think about all the companions. They could have said, “This man is crazy. I am staying home.” Instead, they chose to follow this dynamic man to the edges of the universe. They have total faith in him to save the universe each time. They don’t mind that their normal lives are gone. They will even wait for him to come back. Just look at Amy Pond and Sarah Jane. Several of the lady companions, and Captain Jack, have fallen for him. And why not? He is the romantic hero, knight in shining armor, and the man of mystery all rolled into one.
Everyone has their favorite Doctor. People argue and praise the merits of each one. Some will say David Tennant is the best Doctor ever. Others will argue for Tom Baker. I have my favorite Doctor as well but to me the very idea of the Doctor is crushworthy. He is the dream we all have of going on the adventure of a lifetime. He is the step into the unknown that we are often afraid to take. There is plenty of fiction where the main character is swept along through the story with a debonair hero/heroine they just met. I had that dream as a kid. I think I still do, a little. The Doctor allow us this fantasy without the real world intruding. The fact is, it’s highly unsafe to actually go off with strangers.
I think most Doctor Who fans wish a TARDIS would appear in front of their house, that the Doctor would step out and offer you the chance to travel with him. You know it will be dangerous. There will be plenty of heartbreak. You will see things you can’t unsee. Yet, you would follow the Doctor because you believe in him. You also know that falling in love with him might be pointless but you do it anyway. He is irresistible. For an alien as old as he is, he is still pretty spry.
The Doctor probably wouldn’t take you to a dinner and a movie. Most of your dates would likely end in a fiery explosion or a Dalek invasion. You are pretty likely to be held prisoner by an enemy of his. He always makes up plans as he goes along. Overall, the Doctor would be the worst boyfriend you ever had; yet, you would never regret a single journey you took with him.
