As promised, here’s part ten of my celebration of geeky covers. Slightly fewer songs this time in order to get a couple of them out there in a timely fashion, but still some good stuff. Quite a few new artists this time, as well, but definitely some familiar ones, too. As usual, enjoy!
Australasia – “Twin Peaks Theme” (originally by Angelo Badalamenti)
Just in time for the release of Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery, check out this perfectly mellow cover of the theme. (h/t to Cover Me Songs for this one, which actually came out a few months ago).
The Doubleclicks – “Free Bird” (originally by Lynyrd Skynyrd)
During their Kickstarter, The Doubleclicks promised they’d cover this if they made some ridiculously stupid amount of money as a stretch goal. They passed it. And they kept their word. But you still shouldn’t call out for it at their concerts…
The Doubleclicks – “Trogdor” (originally from Homestar Runner)
With the recent announcement of the return of Homestar Runner, I had to include this one on the list. Not much to say other than check it out!
Andrew Allen Trio – “Dimetrodon” (originally by The Doubleclicks)
With The Doubleclicks featured twice, it seems fitting to include a cover of one of their songs. This one’s an instrumental jazz version of the non-dinosaur song from their newest album. The Andrew Allen Trio also has jazz versions of music from Star Trek and video games as well as an upcoming double album of superhero themes (which already went out to Kickstarter backers, but I’m not sure when it comes out for the general public).
FatKid DogShirt – “Setting Sail, Coming Home” (originally from the Bastion soundtrack, by Darren Korb)
This is an amazing a cappella version of the closing theme from Bastion. Be sure to check out their other videos as well; I get the distinct impression this won’t be the last time we’ll hear about this group in my column.
Player Piano – “Akira” (originally from the Akira soundtrack, by Geinoh Yamashirogumi)
I had completely forgotten how great the soundtrack for Akira is until I watched this phenomenal interpretation. If you love the movie, you owe it to yourself to check out this video, even if just for the cosplay (but the music is pretty great, too).
ShoEboX and the great Luke Ski – “Mwahaha” (originally by Ookla the Mok)
Ookla the Mok’s song about villains won the Logan Award for Outstanding Original Comedy Song at FuMP Fest 2014, but the band couldn’t be there, so ShoEboX from Worm Quartet and the great Luke Ski performed it in their stead. And did a mighty fine job, I must say.
The Queen’s Guard at Buckingham Palace – “The Game of Thrones Theme”
OK, I’m not a fan of GoT, but even I have to admit this is pretty cool. Of course, I’m not sure it bodes well for the royal family…
