A few weeks ago, I saw this post come across my Tumblr dash. It was for HabitRPG, which is a free website where you play an RPG, but it’s all about you. For example, say you want to exercise everyday, but aren’t motivated for whatever reason. You put “exercise” into either your Habits or Dailies or both and just tick it off when it’s done! You get experience and gold, which you can use to buy items or buy rewards you come up with yourself. It’s really easy to do — you make an account and start adding things to your lists. Then you can customize your avatar, look at Guilds to join, and start talking to people. Everyone is friendly and willing to help. You can also join challenges, which can give rewards of Gems. Gems come into the game around level 4.
Here’s my avatar at the moment:
I’ve got plate armor, helm, and shield with a sapphire sword and a blue dragon pet, which I’ll talk about more in a minute.
Okay, let’s talk about your task page. First we have Habits:
It has plus and minus signs:
You hit plus when you’ve done something and minus when you haven’t. You do lose HP (which is capped at 50 no matter your level) when you hit the minus button. You can do these as many times a day as you’d like.
Next is Dailies:
As the name implies, these can be once per day.
Once you do your daily, just check it off and it turns grey. Every task you enter starts at yellow. The more you do it, it turns green, and then blue. If you don’t do it, it turns orange and then red. If you don’t do all your dailies or only do some of them, when the day clocks over, your HP takes a hit.
Third is To-Dos:
To-Dos are just things you need or want to do. Not doing them doesn’t affect your HP.
They look like Dailies:
You can find completed To-Dos at the bottom of that tab.
Finally is Rewards:
You can make your own, like if you study for one hour, you can play games for one hour. You can also set the gold amount the reward is worth; the standard is 10 gold. The game offers some rewards of its own, around level 4:
(These are not the starting rewards.) It starts off as Warrior gear until level 10, when you can pick between Warrior, Mage, Healer, and Rogue.
Another great thing is collectable pets, which also start at level 4. The pets range from wolves to dragons to flying pigs. They come in a range of colors, from blue to golden to zombie! The pets do drop randomly as you do your tasks, but you can also buy them (and the colors) with gems. Food also drops from doing tasks. The food isn’t for you, but for your pets! If you feed them the right type of food they will level up and become mounts!
HabitRPG has a good tutorial when you first sign up. It explains everything that the site can do. The wiki is also up to date as well and very helpful. I’ve been playing for a couple weeks, and I’m already level 15. Plus I’ve actually done some of the things I’ve been wanting to, like reading and writing more. I definitely recommend giving the site a shot, it’s fun and keeps you to your tasks.
I got there via the Lifehacker blog about a year ago, and I concur that it’s an awesome thing. Can’t say that it completely keeps me on track, but “oh no I have to get all my dailies done so I don’t die overnight because I’m down to 1 HP” tends to be highly motivating. Now if I can just keep myself from spending too much time in the chat area and actually get to work…
@Ann Wells: I want to horde all the pets/mounts, so that’s what keeps me going! I haven’t tried the chat area too much, but it seems like a lot of fun and the people are so nice.
