In this issue of Mass Effect: Foundation, the focus is on Ashley Williams and the fall of Eden Prime, which happens slightly before the main action starts in the game, where Shepard is sent to clean up and runs into Ashley along the way.
Note: This recap may contain spoilers!
Once again the Illusive Man is up to something as he wants to know exactly what happened on Eden Prime and what attacked the colony. Rasa, from the last issue, cons Ashley into talking about what happened to Eden Prime. In the game, if you talk to Ashley, you learn that she and other members of her family have been passed over for promotion because her grandfather surrendered in order to save lives. Apparently the Alliance military has a problem with that, so in the comic, we are treated to Ashley being passed over as leader of a mission, but we also see that the other squad members don’t care about her family history and respect Ashley.
Soon Ashley’s squad finds another squad dead. Then we see what we see in the game: the squad fighting some Geth and the massive ship, Sovereign. Once the feed cuts out, Ashley is on her own fighting the Geth, at least until she runs into Shepard. Once Ashley is done talking to Rasa, she calls Leng and tells him about the Geth. Rasa wants to talk to Shepard, since they were affected by the beacon, but the Illusive Man calls both Rasa and Leng back.
The comic just gives more backstory to the Mass Effect universe, which only makes the universe more interesting. I liked finding out that Ashley’s squadmates didn’t care about her family history, they just cared that she was good at her job. I also liked finding out that the Illusive Man was just as clueless about the Geth as everyone else. Putting all the puzzle pieces of the universe together is fun and I can’t wait to find out more about the Normandy Crew.
