DC Direct has been knocking the ball out of the park consistently with their Cover Girls of DC statue series, based on the art of Adam Hughes. The newest release is Catwoman, and here’s a look at how she measures up to the rest of the series.
I’m a big fan of DC Direct’s recent statue lines, and I recently reviewed the Black Canary statue here. Moreso than any of their other current statue and bust releases, the Cover Girls line has produced some of the best sculpts and paint jobs, not to mention the best representations of Adam Hughes’s art outside of Sideshow’s comiquettes series. All the statues in the Cover Girls series are inspired by actual comic covers drawn by Hughes, but they’re translated into 3D by the teams at DC Direct.
This one is based on the cover to Catwoman #46, with femme fatale Selina Kyle posed with her right hand on her hip and the left up at her goggles. She’s wearing her modern vinyl costume with her trademark whip tied around her waist to dangle behind her like a cat tail. The hip-cocked design of the statue just might even be an improvement over the original artwork, with a few slight modifications and tweaks to the pose and attitude.
Like the rest of the statues in this line, Catwoman stands atop a circular black base with her character logo on top. The figure and base come as one piece, so you don’t have to worry about fitting any pegs into any holes or notches or the statue toppling off the supports. This overall piece screams of quality and really is top notch, not to mention one of the most photogenic statues I’ve gotten in a long time. The original Hughes art is, of course, 2D, but the marvelous statue designers have managed to make this thing look phenomenal from all angles in 3D, something that hasn’t always worked out with the other entries in the line.
It’s safe to say that this is not just my favorite Cover Girls of DC statue to date but also my definitive Catwoman statue. The character’s cunning nature, blended with her slinky seductiveness, is represented here better than in any other Catwoman piece I’ve picked up. For once, I have absolutely no complaints. It’s an awesome statue and well worth the price of admission.
