Hey there everyone! I’m here to announce the first ever Fandomania book discussion! We are going to start a monthly discussion based on anything and everything book related. For our first topic of conversation, we will be discussing all things dystopian in fiction. I know, I know — a real crowd pleaser. However, dystopia isn’t just a theme, but a subgenre unto itself, and has been very influential in the field of science fiction.
Take, for example, these books:
1984 by George Orwell
The Time Machine by H. G. Wells
R.U.R. by Karel Čapek
We by Yevgeny Zamyatin
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K Dick (and its film adaptation, Blade Runner)
I could go on for quite a few more books, but I think pretty much everyone is familiar with at least one book on that list if not ALL of them. Dystopian fiction has a lot of ground that can be discussed. In our first chat I would like to discuss it as a genre, get book recommendations from you, and have us all share our thoughts on this interesting subgenre.
The “chat” will be held on AOL Instant Messenger, and here are the details:
When: October 5, 2009, 8pm EST (If you can’t make it at that time, get there when you can!)
Who: FandomaniaKelly is hosting this chat, so find her on AIM, send her an IM, and she will invite you to the chat.
What: After introductions and a brief discussion about any new and good books you’ve read lately, we will dive right into this month’s topic.
Any other questions you may have please leave them in the comments section or you can email me at kelly@fandomania.com. Hope to see you there!
