The fine folks at CHUD spoke with Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, this week, and he dropped a few interesting tidbits about the plethora of upcoming comics-to-film adaptations that are happening. Among the notable hints and facts are:
- The Captain America movie will be set during World War II and will be called The First Avenger: Captain America.
- Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and the Hulk are confirmed as “core members” of The Avengers.
- A director for the Thor film will be announced by the end of the summer.
- Feige strongly hints that the Mandarin will indeed be the main villain for Iron Man 2.
It sounds like Marvel is committed to making a cohesive superhero movie universe, which is exactly how they should be approaching these films. The two Iron Man movies, The Incredible Hulk, the Cap film, and Thor all will be leading up to the release of The Avengers. If the hype and excitement around the first Iron Man is any indication of what’s to come, we can expect huge things for Marvel in the next few years.

After his appearance on The Tonight Show, Robert Downey, Jr, spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the possibility of his appearing in the recently announced Avengers movie. It seems a no-brainer that Downey will reprise his role as Iron Man in the film, but he’s remaining tight lipped about the role for now. When asked about the Avengers movie, his response is:
I really don’t know. What I’m on board for right now is the ride home. I don’t want to start talking out of my league, because that would have certainly been my inclination in the past. I kind of know how to keep my teeth together a little better than I used to.
The Avengers film is scheduled for a July 2011 release. This will follow the releases of at least four more Avengers tie-in movies in the interim–The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man 2.

With the huge success of last weekend’s Iron Man film, it comes as no surprise that Marvel has many more movie adaptations on the way. Marvel released their first quarter earnings for 2008 today, along with the announcements and even release dates for four new films:
Marvel today updated its feature film slate strategy and plans for the next three years, locking in key release windows for its character franchises. In order to focus its attention on maximizing the success of an Iron Man sequel and the launch of Thor in the summer of 2010 and because Marvel believes that the summer is the optimal time to launch a new property, the Company will not release a self produced film in 2009. Marvel plans to launch its 2010 film slate with the release of the sequel, Iron Man 2, on April 30, 2010, followed by the launch of Thor on June 4, 2010. Additionally, Marvel is planting its feature film stakes for summer 2011 with an Avengers-themed summer – a two-picture project which will debut on May 6, 2011 with The First Avenger: Captain America (working title), followed by The Avengers in July 2011.

Marvel’s next big event, Secret Invasion, launches with issue #1 on Wednesday, and I’ll be following the twists and turns of the plot here. There’s already been a lot of lead-up, with back-story going back into the annals of Marvel Comics. The deep and extensive history of the alien race known as the Skrulls and their interactions with Earth and the Marvel Universe is so involved that Marvel published a free comic called Secret Invasion Saga to bring readers up to speed. You can take advantage of the primer for free right now on Marvel’s website. Assuming you’re up to date on your Skrull lore, I’m launching straight into my first Skrullwatch update with a rundown of what happened this week in New Avengers #39.

The next animated movie from Marvel won’t feature Ultimate versions or even classic versions of the publisher’s superheroes. Rather, the focus will be on an alternate-universe new generation of heroes—namely, the children of the Avengers. I’m assuming the movie will take a whole lot of liberties and won’t really tie into the real Marvel Universe in any tangible way, given that the movie has Giant Man and Wasp making babies instead of domestic disturbances, and apparently Captain America was supposed to have done some begetting with Black Widow instead of taking a bullet to the gut. Even so, the movie looks interesting, if a bit kiddy-fied. Check out the trailer at Comics2Film:
