So, I am getting married shortly. Like many nerds and geeks, I wanted a theme wedding. One of the fandoms my fiancé and I both like is Doctor Who — thus, we had our theme. We are close to our wedding and I have learned a few things about planning a sci-fi/fantasy wedding — the hard and stressful way. I am not an expert. Don’t take this as gospel. Just take it as advice from someone who has gained some XP over the past few months.
Themed stuff is expensive.
Just type in “Doctor Who Wedding” on Etsy and you get a treasure trove of goodies. Sadly, many of those cut deep into the wallet. There were many things I wanted to get but I had to tell myself no. I have purchased a few things but not too much. Having a themed wedding is pricey. It’s not a one up contest to see who can have the nerdiest one.
It’s okay to mix fandoms.
I’ve learned this is especially true with music. Doctor Who is known for its theme song. We are using it, but there isn’t a lot of oher music from the show that suited our needs, so we turned to our other likes for musical selections. The end result was a mix of Skyrim and Final Fantasy. Don’t stress out trying to remain 100% pure to your theme.
Don’t stress with DIY.
Sites like Pinterest and Etsy have introduced us to a world of individuals who seem to be craft gods. This will probably spark desire in you to create wonderful things for your wedding. I learned it can end in tears. I used to be pretty crafty but my skills have waned over the years. I know I can’t have a 6-foot-tall wooden TARDIS at my wedding. I found it better to back off and ask my friends for help, or find inexpensive ways to buy things.
Some guests won’t get it.
I am expecting expressions of confusion at our wedding. Not everyone there will be a sci-fi fan. I’m pretty sure we will get some strange looks with our attire and music choices. The best thing to remember is that this is the wedding you chose and there is plenty of alcohol for the guests.
Relax, don’t panic, and geek out at your wedding!
