Speed Racer arrives on Digital and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on May 19, marking the first time the film will be available in 4K resolution with HDR. Directed by the Wachowskis, the visually ambitious 2008 adaptation of Tatsuo Yoshida’s classic anime series stars Emile Hirsch as Speed Racer alongside Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, and Roger Allam.
The story follows Speed Racer, a naturally gifted young driver raised in a family devoted to racing. Behind the wheel of the Mach 5, Speed dreams of continuing the legacy of his late brother Rex while competing for his family’s independent racing business. When corporate mogul Royalton attempts to recruit him, Speed’s refusal uncovers corruption at the highest levels of the sport, revealing that many of the world’s biggest races are secretly manipulated for profit. Determined to protect both his family and the integrity of racing itself, Speed joins forces with the mysterious Racer X and enters the dangerous cross-country rally known as The Crucible.
Known for its highly stylized visuals, bold color palette, and blend of live action with anime-inspired design, Speed Racer has developed a strong cult following in the years since its release. This new remastered edition celebrates the film’s growing reputation and includes a mix of new and legacy bonus features. The newly produced FAST / FUTURE / FAMILY: SPEED RACER features the Wachowskis reflecting on the film’s production, visual experimentation, and long-term legacy. Additional extras explore the making of the racing sequences, stunt choreography, the Racer family dynamic, and the film’s unique visual effects approach.
In addition to the home release, Warner Bros. Pictures and Flashback Cinema presented special theatrical screenings of Speed Racer beginning the week of April 25 in more than 200 locations across the United States.
Speed Racer is available May 19 on Digital and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.
