Practical Magic arrives on Digital and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on August 25, marking the first time the 1998 film will be available in 4K resolution with HDR. Directed by Griffin Dunne and based on the novel by Alice Hoffman, the film stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman alongside Dianne Wiest, Stockard Channing, Goran Visnjic, and Aidan Quinn. The newly remastered release arrives just a few weeks before Practical Magic 2 opens in theaters on September 11.
Bullock and Kidman star as Sally and Gillian Owens, sisters born into a family of witches and raised by their eccentric aunts. Magic has always been a part of their lives, but so has a family curse that spells an untimely death for the men the Owens women fall in love with. The sisters take very different approaches to love and their supernatural heritage, but circumstances eventually bring them back together and force them to confront both the consequences of the curse and their own complicated relationship with magic.
Blending romance, comedy, drama, and supernatural fantasy, Practical Magic has developed an enduring following since its original release. At the center of the film is the relationship between Sally and Gillian, with the Owens family and its generations of witches giving the story its distinctive combination of sisterhood, romance, and magic.
The 4K Digital release includes the new feature The Power of Practical Magic, which reunites members of the cast and creative team to look back at the film, its themes of sisterhood, and the legacy it has built over nearly three decades. It also includes a commentary with Dunne, producer Denise Di Novi, Bullock, and composer Alan Silvestri.
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray includes the previously released Casting the Spell and Making Magic featurettes, offering behind-the-scenes looks at adapting Hoffman’s novel and bringing the film to the screen. The disc also includes the Dunne, Di Novi, Bullock, and Silvestri commentary.
Practical Magic is available August 25 on Digital and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.
