Mortal Kombat II arrived on Digital June 9 and is followed by 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD this week. Director Simon McQuoid returns for the follow-up to the 2021 film, with Karl Urban joining the franchise as Johnny Cage. The returning and expanded cast includes Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada.
The sequel raises the stakes as Earthrealm’s champions find themselves facing the threat of Shao Kahn and a battle that could determine the fate of their world. Johnny Cage joins the fight this time around as the warriors are thrown into another round of brutal confrontations featuring characters, locations, and fatalities drawn from the long-running video game series.
Jeremy Slater wrote the screenplay, based on the games created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. James Wan is among the film’s producers, while Benjamin Wallfisch returns to provide the music.
The 4K and Blu-ray releases include several behind-the-scenes featurettes. Mortal Kombat II: Evolving the Saga looks at the returning characters, new alliances, and expansion of the film universe, while Building the Realms of Mortal Kombat explores the combination of practical sets and visual effects used to recreate locations from the games, including The Pit. Mortal Kombat II: Choose Your Fighter focuses on the cast, costumes, weapons, and training, and Klose Quarters Kombat takes viewers behind the film’s fight choreography and stunt work.
The release also includes A “Boon” to Gamers Everywhere, featuring Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon discussing the history and evolution of the franchise across more than three decades of games, movies, and comics.
Mortal Kombat II released June 9 on Digital and July 28 on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD.
