Video game themes, songs from movies and TV, surprising covers, and plenty of Marc with a C and Professor Shyguy make up this latest round of geeky cover songs. Let’s do this!

Super Mario Brothers Theme on a sheng

You’ve probably already seen this one since it made the rounds recently (I first encountered it on Gizmodo); it was even a “Who’s That Noisy?” on The Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe podcast. But just in case you haven’t seen / heard it, you really should.

“Red Light Special” by Professor Shyguy and Marc with a C (originally by TLC)

This is a live performance from Valentine’s Day at Orlando’s Geek Easy. Professor Shyguy and Marc with a C serenade an audience member, and then things get… interesting. There’s also a studio version of this song on Shyguy’s new all cover album, Rhythm and Bloops.

“Everything Is Awesome! (Nerd-Rock Version)” by Kirby Krackle (originally by Tegan and Sara feat. The Lonely Island)

Kirby Krackle put their own spin on this song from The LEGO Movie, substituting nerdy stuff into the list of awesome things. What else can I say except… Awesome!

“8-Bit Gravity Falls Theme” – James Roach (originally by Brad Breeck)

It’s exactly what it says on the tin. Very nicely done, too!

“All Your Base” – Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. (originally by The Laziest Men on Mars)

It’s meme vs. meme in this cover of a song (actually called “Invasion of the Gabber Robots,” I believe) based on a popular early meme. It’s a fun video that already has a feeling of nostalgia due to the rate at which memes fall out of popularity.

“Pinball Wizard” – Claire and the Potatoes (originally by The Who)

Marc with a C’s other band performs a subdued cover of this Who classic. Not much more to say than check it out!

“The Jeep Song” – The Doubleclicks (originally by Amanda Palmer)

OK, I know I featured another version of this a couple of years ago, and this version is also about that old, but I just discovered it. What makes this one worth featuring? Amanda F***ing Palmer herself actually playing with the sisters Webber. I don’t know how I missed this before, and I’m really curious to hear the story behind its occurrence, but I’m glad to know it exists!

“Wrecking Ball” – Professor Shyguy (originally by Miley Cyrus)

The always awesome Professor Shyguy delivers a really great cover of this Miley Cyrus hit. The video is absolutely hysterical; I wonder if all of the people were in on what was going on. I’m sure most were, but I’m not sure about all of them.

“She’s an Angel” – PopUp Chorus (originally by They Might Be Giants)

I discovered this cover of one of my favorite TMBG songs from a recent tweet from the band. The PopUp Chorus is a group in Durham, NC, that meets weekly, with different members and no commitment, to sing two songs together. They then put the video up on YouTube. Sounds like a fun project; I’m surprised they don’t have more views on their channel.

“Arnold Layne” – Marc with a C (originally by Pink Floyd)

Marc with a C doing Pink Floyd. So it’s not a King Crimson cover, but it’s sorta close at least. Pretty cool, and the album also features plenty of other great covers.

claire and the potatoes, dale earnhardt jr. jr., james roach, Kirby Krackle, marc with a c, popup chorus, professor shyguy, super mario bros, the doubleclicks
