There’s a joke that says you can find an audience for anything by sticking “dot Tumblr dot com” onto the end of it. While that might not be exactly accurate, it is true that there’s a ton of surprisingly creative stuff to be found on Tumblr, much of it related to genre fandom. Today we’re starting a new weekly feature on Fandomania that will spotlight some of the gems we come across on Tumblr. You can expect a new Fandom Tumblr of the Week each Thursday, and please feel free to comment with suggestions of other great Tumblr-based fandom blogs we should check out. With that preamble out of the way, here’s our very first featured Tumblr!
Fictional Characters Reading Books
Fandom(s): Assorted TV shows and movies
Theme or gimmick: The blog consists almost entirely of photos and screencaps of various popular fictional characters reading real-life books in the context of their shows and movies.
When it started: August 11, 2011
Tumblr intro: “Growing up, I had two fictional heroes, Matilda Wormwood and Rory Gilmore. These were powerful girls who loved to read, and helped me to realise that loving to read was not lame, and that being a nerd was a way of life.”
Why it’s great: This Tumblr expresses a love of TV and movie fandom, as well as of reading, by extracting golden nuggets of literacy that otherwise might have gone unnoticed. I didn’t recall that Mr. Bean and Teddy once read Asterix and the Laurel Wreath, but I feel enriched for having been reminded.
