While Marvel Studios continues to build their ever growing and ever deepening movie universe with the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier last weekend, Sony is working on developing their own little corner of the Marvel Universe. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is slated for release on May 2, and its sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, already has a confirmed release date of June 10, 2016. Somewhere in the midst of all that, Columbia Pictures is spinning the Spidey villains off into their own feature, The Sinister Six. Comics fans will recognize the original Sinister Six as a union of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery, bringing together Doctor Octopus, Electro, Mysterio, Sandman, Kraven the Hunter, and Vulture for a formidable supervillain team-up.
The Sinister Six film does not yet have a release date, and details are scant, but it does have a director. Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods director) is in negotiations with Columbia to helm the film. Goddard previously has written and produced for such genre favorites as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, LOST, and Alias. It’s worth noting that he’ll be straddling the great Marvel divide by directing a Marvel film for Sony, as he’s already signed up as the executive producer for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Daredevil TV series that will be exclusive to Netflix.
