It’s been a long time! Welcome back to Character Spotlight. Today we look at Kassandra from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. This feature will be a tad different from others. It won’t be so much talking about how cool she is as how well she works in the game. It’s my chance to nerd out in both the game and history arenas.
(Contains spoilers)
Who is She?
Kassandra is either the female protagonist or antagonist in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Depending on your choices, you can make her good or evil. For this article, we’ll focus on protagonist Kassandra. She is a former Spartan turned mercenary. Kassandra’s goal is to find her family and rid the Greek world of the Cult of Kosmos.
In the Spotlight
First, Kassandra is Sparta! Although she says she is ex-Spartan, Kassandra embodies the qualities of historical Spartan women. Although they were not required to serve in the military, Spartan women were expected to be just as tough as men. Women were trained to have physically fit bodies. Granted, it was to give birth to healthy children, but women needed to be tough otherwise. Kassandra, shall we say, is very fit and athletic. She is a warrior. She also, either consciously or subconsciously, dresses like a Spartan woman. Spartan women valued natural beauty. Cosmetics were discouraged and women let their hair grow out. Kassandra is naturally beautiful. I know it’s by game design, but they are keeping with Spartan tradition.
Another aspect of Spartan life Kassandra reflects is her lack of fear. She’s been through some things, definitely. She grew up differently than most Spartan women. However, Spartan women were not afraid to be on equal terms with men. They had no problems speaking their minds. Kassandra is the same way. She sees no difference between herself and men. The fluidity of her character is a testament to her upbringing.
Kassandra is a fun character, too. It has nothing to do with Sparta. She embraces the adventure and her mission. Although she is kicks butt as a mercenary, she still has a soft side. However, it gives her more strength instead of lessens it. Kassandra has definitely become one of my favorite game heroines.
