Oh, those crazy zombies and double Angelus/Angels. It’s a fun, run-for-your-life party in the new Angel comic. And by the end of it, I would hope we’re on to bigger and better adventures.
Note: This recap may contain spoilers!
The zombie crew is still coming up from the sea, while Angel and Fred try to fight them off. When attacking from the boat doesn’t work, Angel goes so far as to jump overboard and fight the zombies off from underwater. While that does temporarily hold them off, he knows that they really need to lure them to somewhere else, like the small volcanic island Angel knows is around there, in order to keep them away from the inhabited areas. Good plan, let’s see how well it works out for them.
As Angel pushes the boat to the island, Fred notices that it looks like Angelus and Darla found the place, too. And she also observes that, while they’re changing events in the past, they’re not necessarily changing the course of history with their rewrites. Are all their actions for nothing? Should they just give up? No, they have to keep trying anyway. It’s just going to take them awhile to create long-lasting change.
Upon their arrival, Fred and Angel set about to kill off some of the zombies. They climb up one of the cliffs and push a boulder over, taking out some of the zombies, but before they can do it again Angelus and Darla show up and demand to know who they are. Awkward. Even more so because Angelus seems to have a theory about who they are and Darla’s clued in, too. While nothing is explicitly laid out, the implication is there. And it doesn’t matter in the immediacy anyway because the zombies are targeting their attacks. The foursome have no choice but to fight them off together.
Fred gets an idea, a dangerous yet ingenious idea, which requires Illyria’s help. She tries to pull the Old One out and Angel tells Angelus they have to protect Fred/Illyria while she’s going through with her plan. Yes, trust the being that can destroy them all. It’s a scary prospect. Especially when Illyria comes out and breaks the walls of the lava chamber. While it does take out the zombies, and closes the loop, it also seems extremely dangerous. Thankfully she opens a portal and take them through, leaving behind the imploding island, but it’s not clear if they’re really safe. We’ll have to wait until the next issue to find out for sure!
