The threat of death is still lingering over the school and both Faith and Fred must use their wits if they hope to solve the mystery. The question is whether there’s anyone left to save, or have the vamps already taken what they deem as theirs?
Note: This recap may contain spoilers!
Meredith’s dead body is being loaded up when we open the issue. Faith already did a test on Mary, so she’s been cleared for being a vampire and sent home for safety. But if it wasn’t Mary who was responsible, who was? While logic says that closing the school might be a good immediate reaction, they all know that it’s not a long-term solution. The perpetrators are centralized for now, and if they close down the school they’ll scatter and never be found. So, it’s up to Faith and Fred’s undercover skills to end the bloodshed.
Before getting back to the action of the case, Faith does check in with Angel over video chat. Based on the comments, this conversation took place in the middle of the last Buffy comic, rather than following it immediately, so the timelines are attempting to coincide as best as they can. He does alert her that Archaeus might be involved with what’s going on at the school, too, so the storylines are intertwined. That’s the last we see of the souled vampire in the issue, though, and it’s back to Faith and Fred, the latter of whom is playing lunch lady to get intel from around the school. The students know that Meredith had an accident, but not much else.
The bullies are still pushing Mary to do their bidding, to prove her worth, and she’s still shutting them out. She’s also shutting out Faith, who offers to be there if Mary ever needs to talk. The young student has her own mission in mind, namely revealing the truth about Meredith being dead to Shane. A note left in his locker and an after-school meeting is in the plan. What wasn’t in the plan, though, was that Shane already knew about Meredith. How? Well, let’s just say Shane’s a bit more undead than one would think. And if that wasn’t enough, Faith gets attacked by the bullies herself after gym class and, between her and Fred, manages to take out two of the three girls. If only the trio were the only ones they had to worry about. Looking at the last panel, it may be that Mary, Faith, and Fred are the only living people left in the school. How are they going to survive this one? Next month, maybe we’ll find out the answer.
