With a whole lot of action, but not a lot of conversation, Angel and Illyria get into it during this month’s issue. The vampire cannot let history repeat itself, and if he can prevent Illyria from causing massive death among her followers, he’s going to try to make it so. Actions definitely speak louder than words.
Note: This recap may contain spoilers!
As we start the issue, Angel is facing off against Illyria. He is trying, and sometimes failing, to make her see reason and not allow her to sacrifice both herself and the lives of her people. It seems like whatever path Illyria takes, death is a certainty. And the volcano’s threat of eruption, along with the threat of attack, is something that she must face and hope to come out the victor.
Added to that, Illyria’s people don’t really think it’s really her bound there in a mortal form. It’s understandable, since a mortal body is weak in comparison to Illyria’s powerful existence. However, once they get verification from Swal that she is who she claims, they understand that obedience is the only course of action. And when she tells them to retreat, to save themselves once the interloper begins to attack, then that is what they must do even if they would rather stand and fight.
The entire confrontation seems to go much quicker and easier than expected. Illyria manages to scare the interloper away, but still feels guilty about what went down. And it’s up to her to confront her past self, to make it clear the importance of changing paths. If she does not, her people will suffer the same fate as before and history will just repeat itself.
But even that promise of supposed drama falls flat. Past and present Illyria have a meeting of the minds and seem to come to an agreement. And while the meeting took a lot out of present Illyria, so much so that she reverts to Fred, past Illyria will send them forward in time and it seems this will offer them the protection they need. No more danger, no more threat of time paradoxes, just Angel and Fred moving forward in time to a safer location. Where they’ll end up we don’t know, but the current drama looks to be well tied up. Now Angel and Fred just need to draw Illyria out from her mental hiding place. Until then, they’ll keep on surviving as best they can.
