This week I wanted to do something new, Cringeworthy vs. Cringeworthy. Plus, this has been on my mind since last Friday and I need to write it out. I really like the show Grimm. It’s an interesting take on the original Brothers Grimm stories (the really morbid ones) and the storylines are generally good. There are some interesting characters… and some that really get under my skin.
Disclaimer: I’m not talking about or dissing the actresses in this post. This is strictly about their characters. I have no problems with the actresses. They are cool people. Also, may contain spoilers.
Who Are They?
Juliette Silverton (Bitsie Tulloch) and Adalind Schade (Claire Coffee) are two central female characters on NBC’s Grimm. Juliette was previously a good hearted veterinarian dating Nick. Adalind was a Hexenbiest who was bent on destroying Nick’s life. Now, their characters have almost flipped roles entirely.
But who will win the cringeworthy challenge?
Juliette
I was okay with Juliette until the past two seasons. Then she got on my cringeworthy radar. I thought her becoming a hexenbiest would make her less whiny. It did but it also made her psychotic. Sometimes, embracing the dark side can make a character cooler. Not with Juliette. All the things that minorly annoyed me before are really aggravating now. She blames everyone for her problems and refuses to do anything about them. Juliette’s been through some stuff. Some of it was out of her hands but the rest were choices. She chose to stay with Nick. She chose to help him become a Grimm, etc… Now, she wants people to pay for their choices and hers as well. That really grates on my nerves. I will agree that Juliette is the victim of poor character development.
Adalind
I liked Adalind before she became a baby mama. She was evil, she knew it, and didn’t care what others thought. Now, she wins the crazy baby mama of the year award. I get she wants her child back. Yet, there is one problem Adalind has had throughout the whole show. She doesn’t see consequences. She only sees actions. That is why she is in her current situation on the show. She is hunted by Juliette and her little stint disguising herself as Juliette left her with baby #2 on the way. I don’t like characters who never learn from their actions. Adalind consistently pulls the same stunts over and over again. She also likes to blame others for her mistakes, too, although she appears to be growing out of that habit — just a little. However, she has recently adopted a “poor me” attitude that is just as bad as Juliette’s “I hate everyone” attitude.
It’s hard to say which if the more cringeworthy in this case. I would say they are tied.
