Well, geez, this list just kind of crept up on me! I didn’t even realize I had so many videos piled up until I started compiling the list. It’s been too long since I’ve written anything for this column, so let’s get back into it with a list of recent (or at least recent to me) videos. I should have several mini-reviews coming soon, too, hopefully next week.
melodysheep – “The Joy of Discovery”
In this melodysheep tune, there is no autotuning of Bill Nye’s voice. Instead, his recent speech from a debate with creationist Ken Ham is set to music. It’s an absolutely wonderful statement and the music and visual really add to its power.
Mega Ran – “The Dance (No Sleep)”
Ran’s newest video from Castlevania: The Nocturnal Cantata tells the story of how he became the rapper he is today, using samples from Castlevania. It’s a pretty simple video, but the song is really good, so go check it out!
The Doubleclicks (feat. Adam WarRock) – “Tabletop Games”
The Doubleclicks recently appeared on an episode of Wil Wheaton’s Tabletop. Before doing so, they decided to write a song that mentioned all of the games played so far on the show for their Monthly Song Monday series. Add in Adam WarRock and you’ve got yourself a truly awesome song.
The Doubleclicks – “Love You Like a Burrito”
Speaking of The Doubleclicks, they’re hard at work on their new album, which will include the previous song as well as this one. They asked for people on Twitter to send in pictures of themselves holding up various words from the song and then cut together a video using the pix synced up to the music. They originally intended to cut it with their performance video, but they got so many pix they decided to make two videos instead!
Daigo Komiya 2014
OK, strictly speaking this isn’t actually a video for the song; it’s a video of Daigo Komiya showing off his yo-yo skills. But since it uses my favorite song Doctor Popular’s Destroy All Presets, “Lava,” as the background music, and most of the song actually gets played, I figured it was worth putting on this list. Plus I happen to love watching yo-yo masters in action.
Marian Call – “Time Traveler”
As usual with Marian Call, this song is not just about one thing; in this case, it’s both about Doctor Who as well as the ability of books to help us travel through time. This fan-made video perfectly captures the mood and meaning of the song. Very nicely done.
Mr. B the Gentleman Rhymer – “Hip-Hop Was to Blame After All”
Mr. B takes us on a very brief history of hip-hop, telling us exactly why it ruined society. Or maybe it wasn’t the music at all…
Frogsuit – “Kickin’ It with RoboRob” (NSFW)
I’m not nearly as familiar with the individual members of Frogsuit as I probably should be. They have such high energy and make such great beats (well, duh, with RoboRob involved). I’ll definitely be rectifying that lack of knowledge soon.
Sci-Fried – “Embrace the Dark Side”
If I’m ever at a con that offers a panel like this one, I’m definitely going to it. Even if I’m not really all that evil, it will definitely be entertaining.
Debs & Errol – “Wheatley”
If ever anyone makes a Portal musical, this definitely needs to be included. In fact, I nominate Debs to play Chell. Get on that, Internet!
Schäffer the Darklord (feat. kristybee) – “Boys”
“This ain’t anything girls can do / boys can do better. / We’re here to set a new standard: / We’re in this together!” ‘Nuff said!
Hello, the Future! and The Long Holidays – “Giant Robot Song”
Does art need to have a deeper meaning in order to be any good? Of course not! Interestingly, however, this song, a celebration of pop culture, actually does have a deeper meaning about the nature of art. Very meta!
MJ Hibbett – “Alan Moore”
This is actually six years old, but I ran across it somewhere online recently (I should probably take better notes…). And besides, do I really need an excuse to share a song about the great Alan Moore?
