Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is lining up to be a mega hit, throwing giant robots and giant monsters at each other for spectacular results. In this age of CG effects and slick presentations, it’s easy to assume that Pacific Rim would rely entirely on computers to create the sorts of fantastic visuals that will sell the uber fights that surely fill the film. Not so, says del Toro in a newly released featurette. In this video he discusses the importance of practical effects and shows off the elaborate physical sets that were used for shooting the interiors of the robots. It’s the kind of behind the scenes moviemaking magic that we just don’t see that much these days, and any themepark that doesn’t see this video and want to snatch up the rights for a ride is crazy.
