Hey there, fans! Every Thursday, I’ll be bringing you all the best in what’s happening in the world of anime, manga, and basically anything and everything Japanese!
Microsoft Japan has decided to jump on the OS-tan Internet meme by creating their own mascot for their latest Windows operating system. An OS-tan is a “moe” personification of a computer operating system. Their mascot, named Nanami Madobe (a Japanese pun: “nana” = 7, “madobe” = “near the window”), is the first time a company has made their own mascot for an operating system, as all of the other OS-tans are all fan made.
The commercial itself is set in the Akihabara district of Tokyo, the technological hub of Japan, and has Nanami show how easy it is to build and operate a computer with a Windows 7 OS. The commercial is available as a bonus DVD for the first 7777 copies of Microsoft’s Windows 7 Ultimate DSP editions, as well as other extras like wallpapers and sounds.
Personally, I think this marketing strategy done by Microsoft Japan is exceptionally well played, as it would behoove the company to market its products to the people who use it the most. The commercial itself is exceedingly cute and very well done for a commercial, and the character itself is probably cute enough to warrant a fan following. I fully expect Nanami-tan to appear in other Windows 7 commercials, and for Microsoft to follow this theme with its succeeding systems. If only there were something similar done in the US…
