"I've got a bullet for each of those critics who didn't like The Cable Guy."

I was busy in Chicago this weekend and fell behind on my moviegoing. Luckily John was back in theaters and caught Tropic Thunder. Here’s his review, after the jump.

Fan Art Friday: Slave Leia

Tags: , , ,

The Clone Wars is in theaters this weekend, beginning an all new animated saga in the Star Wars universe. And as luck would have it, this year’s Dragon*Con is just a few weeks away, likely signifying yet another annual gathering of Slave Leia costumes en masse. It should be no surprise that the internet is full of talented artists (some of them with quite notable careers in their own right!) who have been putting out Star Wars art for a long time now. Take a look at a few of their works, and be sure to go back to the artists’ galleries to let them know you like their work.

Book Review: Geek Love

Geek Love by Katherine Dunn

I am going to warn you now that this book is not an easy read.  Not because of its choice of words or its style, but it will emotionally and mentally beat you up.  I personally love books that make me feel, and this one runs the gamut from rage and disgust to sympathy and empathy.  It definitely answers the age old question, “What do you do when your circus side show starts to lose popularity?” (Ok maybe YOU have never thought that, but I’m sure someone out there has), and this book’s answer is, “Breed your own, at what ever costs necessary.”  And the Binewski family pays, and pays handsomely (pun intended).

These Ten Sex Scenes Got Weird, Didn’t They?

Tags: ,

Sex scenes are a staple of cinema. A successful sex scene is one that never feels gratuitous or tacky. It captures a type of beauty of the human form. Then again, there are those which provoke you to tilt your head, wince, shudder, and raise an eyebrow. The funny part is, that’s why they’re more memorable. Presented here and now is a list of the weirdest sex scenes you could NEVER imagine.

Joss Whedon on Batman

Tags: , ,

MTV’s Splash Page talked with Joss Whedon today about the Batman movie he pitched prior to Christopher Nolan’s masterful relaunch of the franchise. Among other tidbits about his own vision for the Caped Crusader, Whedon mentions:

“In my version, there was actually a new [villain], it wasn’t one of the classics — which is probably why they didn’t use it… It was more of a ‘Hannibal Lecter’ type — he was somebody already in Arkham Asylum that Bruce went and sort of studied with. It was a whole thing — I get very emotional about it, I still love the story. Maybe I’ll get to do it as a comic one day.”

I’m sure whatever Joss would have done would have been brilliant, but I’m not sure I would have liked kicking the new franchise off with a completely original bad guy. Batman is, to a large extent, defined by his villains, and he has one of the best rogue’s galleries in comics.

Alison Carroll Is The New Lara Croft

Tags: , , , ,

Following an extensive tryout process, Alison Carroll, a gymnast and receptionist from London, has been named the new official Lara Croft. Carroll, 23, will appear as Lara at promotional events surrounding the release of the upcoming Tomb Raider: Underworld game. For what it’s worth, I think she makes a pretty awesome Croft, and her action poses are entirely game-convincing.

XBox Live Arcade Goes Commando and Pubbing

Tags: , , , ,

The new featured game on the XBox Live Arcade this week will be Bionic Commando Rearmed, the highly anticipated remake of the classic Bionic Commando action game. It hits the marketplace on Wednesday for 800 MS Points ($10) and features new graphics and weapons, as well as added multiplayer modes and more. It’s worth noting that this is the one that looks really cool and not the seemingly lackluster new 3D Bionic Commando sequel that was shown at this year’s E3.

Also up for download this week on the Arcade is Fable 2 Pub Games, the set of gambling mini games that will earn you money to spend in Fable 2 once it’s released. If you’ve preordered Fable 2, you should be getting a code that will let you download this game for free. If not, Pub Games will set you back 800 MS Points ($10). I’ve been lazy about getting my preorder for Fable 2 in, despite it being the single game I’m most looking forward to, but you can bet I’ll have it on order prior to Pub Games’ drop.
