Little Damn Heroes Kaylee Maquette

Firefly is very possibly the most successful canceled TV series ever, and the show still won’t die, six years after its ending and three years after its movie continuation, Serenity. Proving that the ship has some life in her yet, Quantum Mechanix has released the first in their new line of Little Damn Heroes maquettes, featuring the ship’s mechanic Kaylee as the inaugural figurine.

When they say these are Little Damn Heroes, they’re not kidding. Kaylee clocks in around 4 3/4″ tall, from the top of her umbrella to the bottom of her base. I really was surprised by the diminutive size of the figurine, but it really fits the adorable art style used to capture these characters. And once they’ve all been released, I’m positive a full Serenity crew on my shelf will be more endearing than a bunch of Hummels.

Kaylee comes packed in four pieces: the main figurine, a round black base, a metal rod, and the canopy for the umbrella. The rod plugs into the canopy to be the umbrella’s handle, and it then slides into the figure through a hole in the back of her hair and out through her clasped hands. Kaylee’s feet fit snugly into indentations in the base, providing for a secure platform for her. The umbrella rod can be a little unstable and tends to slip through her hands quite easily. Once you have her placed where she’s going to be displayed, the umbrella situation should be just fine as long as you don’t jostle or tilt Kaylee.

Limited to 1500 pieces, Kaylee is sculpted in a very cute cartoony style, with a large round head and oversized feet. The vibrant colors and excellent paintjob pull together to enhance the sculpt, making this a fantastic collectible for Serenity fans. Sure, it doesn’t really look like Jewel Staite at all, but an accurate human likeness isn’t the appeal of this statue series. It’s all about the cute factor, and the Little Damn Heroes deliver in spades. The next piece released will be Captain Malcolm Reynolds, also coming from Quantum Mechanix.
