I've watched pro-wrestling for most of my adult life (and practically all my of my adolescence). I get so ridiculously tired of the "It's fake" response when I tell people I watch wrestling. I'm with you. I have no real desire to see one man break another man in half. I even went so far as to go through a professional wrestling school so, when people dismis the physical toll wrestling takes on the human body, I can honestly tell them that, fake as it may be, those moves aren't all faked. I have a B.A. in English & a minor in Theatre and once headed a debate on how pro-wrestling is the modern equivalent of the classic Greek and Roman theatre. People want violence but very few of us want real & true violence. What we want is a perceived violence, much like we've always wanted from theatre and, in recent history, film. However, I also support the thesis a friend of mine explored that professional wrestling is a socially acceptable form of the expression of latent homosexuality. Having said that, I don't care what it's an expression of so long as it is entertaining and distracting. And Wrestlemania is a staple in this house EVERY YEAR and has been since my husband and I have been together. He watches for the Divas but atleast he watches. It's not for me because I'm always worried someone is going to accidently rip off someone's arm or suffer permanent paralysis or something. I might get over that fear if one of the heels were a Klingon or a cyborg, or better yet a Klingon cyborg. Either way the combination of athletics and drama is impressive. You gotta admit that.
