HBO has announced that their new vampire drama True Blood, which premiered on September 7, already has the go ahead for a second season. The show stars Anna Paquin as Sookie Stackhouse, the protagonist in a series of novels by creator Charlaine Harris. The pilot episode of the series gained an audience of four million viewers, and the second episode grew the audience by twenty-four percent, nearly unheard of in today’s television market.
I actually enjoy waiting for the seasons to come out on DVD, because South Park is the kind of the show that has a lot in common with a can of Pringles. You can’t have just one, and season eleven is absolutely no exception.
Back in 2001, after the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series had wrapped, a Buffy animated series was slated to appear on Fox Kids, starring the voice talents of the entire original cast, minus Sarah Michelle Gellar (who apparently was busy trying to break her Scooby Gang type casting by starring in… Scooby Doo and Scooby Doo 2). The series was to be set during season 1 of the original series, in an adjusted reality where Buffy’s sister Dawn existed prior to her mystical creation in season 5. Here’s a look at the awesome series we missed out on when the project fell through:
The third season of Heroes will premiere on September 22, and two of the new faces we’ll be seeing this time around include Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Breckin Meyer. The duo will play comic book fans from Atlanta who somehow cross paths with the heroes over the course of the season.
The SciFi Channel has announced yet another prequel to Battlestar Galactica that will be airing after the critically acclaimed series ends its four season run next year. The previously announced prequel series called Caprica will show the origins of the Cylons in the Colonies some fifty years prior to the events of the main BSG series. This newest–and as yet unnamed–prequel is a different animal, taking place concurrently with some of the events we’ve already seen in Battlestar Galactica.
Directed by Edward James Olmos, the new Galactica prequel will be a movie that is being written by all-star TV scribe Jane Espenson, and it will be shot in Vancouver like the rest of the series. The movie will show the Cylon side of the human apocalypse, focusing on two Cylon agents just after the nukes obliterated humanity. One of the agents’ stories will take place on board the shell-shocked fleet in the initial days of their flight across the galaxy, and the other takes a look at what the human Resistance was up to, ground-side.
The movie will air on SciFi and then will be released on DVD, similarly to the way the previous BSG feature, Razor, was handled.
And there we have it! Once again, Russell T. Davies and company have given us another spectacular series of our favorite Time Lord, proving that there is no other TV show on the face of the Earth that has more variety in its scenery, its characters, and its stories. The only downside is that we won’t be seeing another full series of the show until 2010. Sure we’ve got the four upcoming specials, and we’ve got Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, but it ain’t the same with out that little blue box flying around.
And now for a bit of nostalgia. He are a series of mini lists looking back on the best bits of Doctor Who: Series Four.
The fourth series (season, for those of us in the US) finale of Doctor Who aired on Friday on Sci Fi, and John, our resident Who expert, is here with his take on the last two episodes. Here’s his review, with spoilers:
Smartasses come in every size and shape, and you can find plenty of them in your TV shows and movies. This week John takes a look at ten notable smartasses you can’t help but love. Read More »
Joss Whedon has been toiling away in his secret lab for the past several months on a new and innovative project called Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. It’s a web-only musical in three parts, starring Neil Patrick Harris, Felicia Day, and Nathan Fillion, and the first act is now online, free to view for a limited time. What are you waiting for? Go watch it! I promise it’s all kinds of awesome.
www.outpostgallifrey.com has just announced that an old friend will be joining an old friend. Nicholas Courtney, known by Doctor Who fans far and wide as former UNIT Officer Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge Stewart, will be making a guest appearance in the Doctor Who spin-off “The Sarah Jane Adventures” during the course of the second series.
Outpost Gallifrey also hints at the return of Sarah Jane’s nemesis Miss Wormwod (played by Samantha Bond) who appeared in SJA’s first episode “Invasion of the Bane.”
Since I hate spoilers as much as Steven Moffat, I recommend checking www.outpostgallifrey.com for pictures and additional info.
