Fandomania Interviews James Moran

James Moran is the Eleventh Doctor!!! Just Kidding. That would be cool though.

The origins of this interview go all the way back to February 2008 in Los Angeles at Gallifrey One, the premiere Doctor Who convention on this side of the pond. This con is where I met writer James Moran. After a slew of conversations over beer and crackers, we continued our diatribes over the internet, and now he has graced Fandomania with his wit and wisdom.

Moran broke out onto the horror scene with his bloody brilliant horror comedy Severance, which we previously reviewed as a Halloween special. Subsequently he gained even wider notoriety when he wrote two highly acclaimed episodes of Doctor Who (”The Fires of Pompeii”) and Torchwood (”Sleeper”).  In this interview, Moran will share with us about his Who experience as well as a little of some other projects he is working on. So read on and enjoy.

Defining the Genre: Military Science Fiction

Attention!  The idea of Military Science Fiction may seem like a subject not worth spending a whole lot of time talking about.  After all, doesn’t it seem rather self explanatory?  It’s about the military, any branch, and it’s about science fiction, usually in the speculative future variety.  However I would put to you that Military Science Fiction is deeper than that.  While it might very well be escapist literature to characterize all of the romanticized visions we have of the military, it can also be a hard hitting commentary on current events and politics.  While there are probably more books in the subgenre than about the subgenre, I did some digging to explore the origins of Military Science Fiction, its themes, and why it’s so interesting to read.

Spoiler Alert: Doctor Who Casting News

We’re very conscious about trying not to spread spoilers here at Fandomania, but there’s a certain Doctor Who casting spoiler that’s been all over the internet today and even is the subject of official BBC interviews. Why they choose to give away the surprises on their own shows, I have no clue, but here it is. If you don’t know the big Doctor Who news and want to remain that way, you should stop reading now. Otherwise, proceed onward, gentle reader.

Review: Mirrors Soundtrack

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that I am not the biggest horror movie fan on the face of the planet. However when given the opportunity to listen to Spanish film composer Javier Navarrete’s soundtrack for the movie Mirrors, I couldn’t say no.  Navarrete was nominated for both an Academy Award and a Grammy for his work on the soundtrack for El laberinto del fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth), which currently stands as one of my favorite movies of all time.  Utilizing The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, rather than computer generated or synthesized music, he again has worked his magic creating a score full of suspense and haunting cues.

NaNoWriMo Turns 10!

NaNoWriMo, which stands for National Novel Writing Month, is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year! Taking place during the month of November, the goal is to write a novel 50,000 words long (or 175 pages).  You’ll need to write furiously because you’ll only have until 11:59 on November 30th to submit your work.

Style and substance are not nearly as important as it would be in any other kind of writing contest, because in this contest, you’re competing with only three things: yourself, procrastination, and time.  Forget editing your ideas; let them flourish! While winning is accomplishing this goal, and no one at NaNoWriMo will actually read or judge the book, you can pat yourself on the back for completing such a daunting task.  Also, there have been 24 writers who have completed NaNoWriMo who have gone on to be published. Who’s to say number 25 won’t be you?

In honor of those who have been published after completing NaNoWriMo, this month I am going to feature a few extra bonus book reviews of their work.  Also, as if I didn’t have enough on my plate, I will be participating as well.  So if you sign up on their website to participate, add me as a friend. My “name” there is Kellykinns.  Good luck to all participants, and if this is the first time you’ve ever heard of NaNoWriMo, check it out and give it a try!

Fandomania: The Masquerade

It is that time of year. Some people like to dress up as black cats, slutty schoolgirls, or brainless Alaskan VP nominees. But I like to think that Halloween is a chance to scare the pants off people (not saying that brainless Alaskan VP nominees aren’t scary in their own way…). So here are some very cool and creepy costumes from some of the best anime and video games in that genre.

Tribute to 007 (Final Part): The Henchmen

Well, here it is: the final part of our four part tribute to all things Bond. When all is said and done, 007 always wins the day, but give credit where credit is due. Bond’s nemeses have never made it easy for him, and all they had to do was hire some of the best henchmen on the scene. For our final Fandomania 007 tribute list, we’re going to pay respect to the errand boys. The middle-men, who have absolutely no problem getting their hands dirty for an evil paycheck.
